Full Tilt Poker Introduces Draw Games

Full Tilt Poker, the second largest online poker portal in the industry, recently announced the latest upgrades to its software, which have been widely applauded by players.

The upgrade, which was available to Full Tilt Poker players beginning on Thursday, vastly increases the number of disciplines offered. Prior to the latest software upgrade, Full Tilt only offered a smattering of Draw games, which left many asking for a wider assortment. This latest update should satisfy many of those players’ requests.

Games that have been added to the site include No Limit versions of Deuce to Seven Triple Draw and Five Card Draw, a Pot Limit version of Five Card Draw, and Fixed Limit versions of Deuce to Seven Triple Draw, Five Card Draw, Badugi, and Ace to Five Triple Draw.

Full Tilt has also tweaked its Mixed Games. While the site still offers the familiar Seven Game format, a new Ten Game format has been introduced that adds Deuce to Seven Triple Draw, Deuce to Seven Single Draw, and Badugi. This is in addition to the HORSE and HOSE games that Full Tilt already had in action.

As a part of the new games being offered, Full Tilt’s upcoming Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) schedule will feature these variations. Beginning on November 10th, FTOPS XVIII will feature a 34-event schedule, with the new Ten Game format tournament being held on November 17th. Team Full Tilt pro Howard Lederer will be the host of the tournament, which has a $150,000 guarantee for a $200 buy-in.

This is the first significant addition to Full Tilt Poker since the introduction of its last innovative game, Rush Poker, in January. Rush Poker, in which players are immediately moved to a new table once they fold their hands, has become very popular for those looking for non-stop action. The popularity of the game is easy to see in the numbers, with approximately 10% of the action on Full Tilt occurring at the Rush Poker tables.

Reaction to the changes has been positive on many of the top poker message boards. At PocketFives.com, the announcement was greeted with a “wooohooooooo FINALLY” from poster “aad.” Also excited was “MacGyver72,” who wrote, “I wish I were already good at any of those new games so I could clean up over the next two weeks vs the donkeys that are going to play it just to try it out.” Other posters have also appreciated some of the additional updates beyond the games, including changes to the last hand history feature and the elimination of several bug issues in Rush Poker.

The addition of these new disciplines of poker puts Full Tilt Poker on par with the industry leader, PokerStars, and could cut into the lead that PokerStars has enjoyed for several years. For quite some time, PokerStars offered many of the games in Full Tilt’s new upgrade and was the central point for players who wanted something beyond Texas Hold’em and Omaha. Now, Full Tilt Poker is stepping up to offer their customers a full range of poker options.

NAPT Los Angeles Adds Bounty Shootout Event

Festivities at the PokerStars North American Poker Tour’s (NAPT) Los Angeles stop may have already begun, but that doesn’t mean that the schedule is set in stone. Tournament organizers announced this week that a new event – a $5,250 Bounty Shootout (BSO) – has been added to the docket and will be inserted into the lineup next week.

While the rest of the NAPT Los Angeles is being held at the famous Bicycle Casino, the $5,250 BSO will take place at the Crystal Casino, just

a short drive south from “The Bike.” It will also be televised on ESPN2 in December. The first day will be split into two flights on Tuesday, November 16th, the first at 11:00am and the second at 6:00pm. The final table players will reconvene on Thursday, November 18th at 2:00pm to battle it out for the title.

For those unfamiliar with Shootout tournaments, they are essentially a series of single-table tournaments. At first, play looks like any other multi-table tournament, but as players are eliminated, the tables are not rebalanced. Instead, each table plays down to a single winner. Once every table has its champ, those winners combine to form new tables and they once again play down to one survivor. This continues for as many rounds as necessary until just one player remains in the entire event. In the case of the $5,250 BSO, there will only be one round before the final table, as the event has a maximum capacity of 81 players. Thus, play will begin with nine tables of nine, with the nine winners meeting at Thursday’s final table.

And, of course, since it is a Bounty tournament, each time a player eliminates an opponent, he receives a cash prize.

Playtech Total Revenue Up 17% in Third Quarter

Gaming Software firm Playtech posted its 2010 third quarter financial results this week and showed an increase in both gross income and revenue. The company announced gross income at €41.3 million, up 30% compared to the same period in 2009, while its total revenues were up 17% to €32.5 million, compared to €27.7 million in the third quarter of 2009.

For the first nine months of the year, Playtech’s gross income was up 31% at €129.2 million and revenue rose 25% to €105.4 million. Excluding the impact of the company’s French closure following new online gambling regulations, gross income compared with the second quarter was up 1% and revenue was down 2%.

Said Playtech CEO Mor Weizer, “Gross income and total revenues for the quarter held up well over the traditionally quiet summer period, especially when excluding the impact of the closure of the French offshore market, which distorts the historic comparisons. After the seasonal slowdown and the aftermath of the World Cup, September as expected was a stronger month and we see this positive trend continuing.”

Poker once again saw a fall in revenue in the third quarter, down 30% to €5.7 million from €8.2 million in Q3 2009. It was also down 21% from the second quarter of 2010. Over the full year through September, poker revenue was at €21.5 million, down 15% compared to the €25.4 million earned in the same period last year.

Playtech software powers the iPoker Network, which includes sites like Titan Poker, Paddy Power Poker, Bet365, Sun Poker, and BetFred. iPoker contains more than 50 skins, making it the most extensive network in the world. According to traffic tracking site PokerSout.com, the iPoker Network trails only PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and PartyPoker in terms of ring game player volume. The site averaged 3,700 cash game players over the past seven days and reached a peak of nearly 7,000 on Thursday.

Revenue from Playtech’s casino, bingo, and William Hill Online operations more than made up for the decline in poker revenue. Casino revenues were up 17% to €21.7 million from €18.5 million in the third quarter of 2009. Bingo revenue totaled €3.1 million, up 11% from the second quarter of this year, reflecting strong growth from Virtue Fusion reinforced by the new Italian bingo network. Meanwhile, Playtech’s acquired interest in William Hill Online produced an €8.8 million profit, up 111% from €4.2 million the year before.

“The recent launches of Betfair casino and our Italian bingo licensees have performed very well from soon after launch, and will be joined by RAY [the Finnish monopoly] in the coming months,” added Weizer. “I am also encouraged by discussions with a number of notable operators, which should deliver a strong pipeline across the product range.”

Ultimately, Playtech decided to shut down its bingo operation this week and announced that two of its biggest earners, Bingo Day and Titan Bingo, would be closing later this month. The news was closely followed by the report that Ruby Bingo would be moving to the full Virtue Fusion software platform.

Bingo Day and Titan Bingo were originally thought to be moving to the Virtue Fusion platform, which is owned by Playtech, but those plans have been put to rest and the two sites will be closed for good by November 15th. Bingo fans can still get their fix at a number of Virtue Fusion sites, including Jackpot Bingo, Ladbrokes Bingo, and William Hill Bingo.
